YAKIMA-The Palouse Area Robotics Team (PART) competed in Yakima against 26 teams from the FIRST Pacific Northwest District, including Washington, Oregon, and Alaska, March 17 through 18, ranking 12th and making it to the playoffs.
The PART SciBorgs consists of 33 members total from Colfax, Pullman, Moscow, and the surrounding Palouse area.
22 students were able to go to compete at the event in Yakima, and after 23 matches the team was ranked 12th, and as the first pick of the number 6 alliance with VIKotics, sister team from Gar-Pal High School.
In addition to being able to compete at the FIRST PNW District Championship in Cheney on April 6 through 8 at Eastern Washington University, the team received the Gracious Professionalism Award for the Sundome event for supporting other teams on and off the playing field. The team is known for supporting other teams with programming, robot parts, mechanical help, and scouting data.
Schweitzer Engineering Laboratory electrical engineer and Lead Mentor of the 4-H PART SciBorgs, Ben Herrman was also named a Woody Flowers District Event Finalist.
"I'm really proud of the students, because even though we had some mechanical challenges on the robot they worked really hard to fix it," Mentor Helena Johnson said, noting that for every match the robot was ready to compete.
Johnson stated that there's always something that needs fixed, but the students who built the robot were able to keep it going.
"We were excited to compete at the Sundome in Yakima," Johnson said, adding that after the event the PART SciBorgs are ranked 13th in the PNW District, which consists of 120 High School Teams. The team left with 71 District points.
The team will also be at the WSU Kid's Science and Engineering Day, Saturday March 25, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Sloan Hall located at 405 Northeast Spokane Street, in Pullman.
Not mentioned in last week's article the PART SciBorgs had 15 students compete in the Clackamas Academy of Industrial Sciences near Portland, Ore., Friday March 3 through 4. There are five students on the drive team that go on the field to operate the robot.
