COLTON-UNIONTOWN-Winner of this year's Colton Uniontown Distinguished Young Woman (DYW) Scholarship went to Kate Schultheis, 16, of Colton.

The Colton Uniontown DYW program started in Sept. 2022, stated Chair of the Colton-Uniontown DYW program, Megan Vinning.

Vinning explained the program was held on Nov. 20, and there were three participants. Kate Schultheis was named DYW, Kyndra Stout won first alternate, and Kaydee Heitstuman was named second alternate.

In first place Schultheis won a $1000 dollar scholarship, for her Scholastic Award, Schultheis won a $150 scholarship, interview award $150, and talent award $150.

As second alternate Heitstuman won a $400 scholarship, and the spirit award which didn't have a scholarship attached. As first alternate Stout won a $600 scholarship, $150 scholarship for each three awards in fitness, self expression, and be your best self essay.

"Our specific program is one of the only ones in the state of Washington with DYW Washington that is held in the fall," Vinning said. She add that the scholarship program is for juniors, and they are considered the class of 2024. The program holds practices once a week, and has five topics which include fitness, talent, self expression, interview, and scholastics.

Schultheis would recommend doing the program to all the sophomores of this year, "I was really nervous, but I think it was a wonderful opportunity," she said, "I would recommend it to anyone I met."

Shutlheis will continue working in all the areas, Vinning explained, "she will participate in the DYW of Washington program held in August 2023 in Pullman, so she'll be preparing for that," Vinning said. Vinning explained that from that there will be one winner who then have the opportunity to participate in DYW United States in June 2024.

"She will be preparing for and going onto the Washington State DYW program where she will have access to more scholarships," said Marketing and Communications Director for the DYW National Office, Tara Principe said.

"Overall I really enjoyed my experience with the DYW program. One of my favorite parts was the secret sisters. It was so much fun to go to practices and work with the other two girls," said Schultheis, "It was fun to see all the girls get in their dresses, and I think it was an overall great experience for me."

Schultheis is looking forward to moving on to state, and added that her favorite part of the program was sharing her talent.

"That poem I said really meant a lot to me," she said, noting that she says it to motivate herself, "being able to share it with other people made me happy, and I really enjoyed working with the people that I worked on it with."
