Machtolf pleads guilty to reckless driving

Gonzaga baseball coach gets day in jail after sentencing

November 23, 2022

DAVENPORT — Gonzaga head baseball coach Mark Andrew Machtolf pleaded guilty to one count of reckless driving in Lincoln County District Court Monday, Nov. 21. The 58-year-old Nine Mile Falls man gave his plea that stems from a DUI incident in Reardan last June.

Machtolf was sentenced to two days in jail with credit for one day served, a $1,500 fine and 24 months supervised probation by presiding judge Carolyn J. Benzel of Adams County.

He was originally arrested by the Reardan Police Department for driving under the influence June 10 after his blood alcohol level read as high as .284, according to police reports. Machtolf was stopped by police outside the SpeedTrap Tap House on Broadway Avenue without incident, records state.

“We’re lucky something catastrophic didn’t happen,” prosecutor Bruce Cox said Monday.

Machtolf expressed remorse as his sentence was handed down by

Benzel.

“I realize that I made some mistakes that night,” Machtolf said. “I’d like to apologize to anybody in the community and anyone I may have hurt. It won’t happen again.”

Machtolf’s sentence came after a plea agreement between his defense and the state. His official sentence was 364 days in jail with 362 days suspended and a $5,000 fine with $3,500 suspended.

The head Bulldogs coach, who was the second Gonzaga athletics coach to be charged with DUI in a year after head men’s basketball coach Mark Few was charged on the same count in Sept. 2021, will report to jail for the one day remaining on his sentence Dec. 9.

Machtolf has been the head baseball coach at Gonzaga for 19 years.
