Kiwanis Club in Colfax

COLFAX– Pullman natives Devon Felstead, and Dan Mattson are looking for anyone interested in starting a Kiwanis Club in Colfax. Kiwanis is a national club that supports youth activities and development.

Mattson and Felstead are both current members of the Pullman Kiwanis Club, as members of the Pullman club they are trying to find potential sponsors and members in Colfax. The Pullman club supports events such as Stuff the Bus, one which they held at the Rosauers. There are clubs within the school that it supports, which teach kids how to organize meetings and do volunteer projects.

Former President of the Pullman Kiwanis Club, Sandra Woodrow is also excited at the opportunity for Colfax to have a Kiwanis club, “the club is really focused on children, and would be a great opportunity for Colfax.”

If a club is started in Colfax, “it would be up to the Colfax club what they want to do,” Mattson said.

There is a specific northwest district of Kiwanis that runs in California that local clubs work with, “they try to identify communities that would benefit from the club,” Felstead said.

“Colfax needs another club that focuses on improving and helping the youth of the community,” He said, “A lot of it would be up to the members of the Colfax community.”

There has to be 15 people interested in getting the club started, Mattson said, noting that so far there are quite a few people interested.

A number of people have signed up in Colfax, Felstead explained, noting that Colfax Interim Chief of Police Bruce Blood, and Superior Court Judge Libey have signed up. “We’re very excited,” Felstead said. If 15 people join then Kiwanis international will charter for the club.

“We went around and visited a lot of people in the community,” Felstead said, “I think we had five sign up right away, and now we need to follow up and get the other ten.” Felstead noted that while everyone trying to get it up and running are busy, they hope to get the club established within a month.
