Colfax girls open state play against Goldendale

Lancers upset Bulldogs in district championship game

YAKIMA - Despite a loss to league rival Liberty (Spangle) in the district championship, the Colfax Bulldogs girls fastpitch softball team is taking a No. 5 ranking into the state 2B tournament.

Colfax opens state play at Gateway Park at 10 a.m. Friday, May 27, on Field 3. The Bulldogs will face 12th-ranked Goldendale.

Meanwhile, the rival Lancers will be taking Field 2 as the No. 7 seed. They will open with No. 10-ranked Rainier .

The state berths follow the Lancers' 6-5 upset of the Bulldogs in the District 7 championship on Saturday, May 21.

The scheduled 2 p.m. game actually started at 5:25, after thunderstorms crossing Northeast Washington left fields at Franklin Park too wet for a game, prompting a move to the Dwight Merkel Sports Complex.

Liberty took a 2-0 lead at the top of the first, but Colfax answered with 3 runs of its own in the bottom.

Liberty's Anna Pittman tied the game at 3 in the top of the second with an over-the-fence home run.

Liberty then took the lead with two runs in the third inning, when Jaidyn Stephens tripled on a 2-2 count, scoring two runs.

Colfax added another run in the bottom of the third, and Liberty answered with 1 in the top of the fourth to set the margin at 6-5.

Colfax could only muster 1 more run, in the bottom of the fifth, and the 6-5 upset was sealed.

During the season, Colfax had topped Liberty twice in league play.

In the title game, Liberty totaled 11 hits with multiple hits from Jordyn Jeske and Stephens.

After the loss, Colfax had a nightcap against Asotin to determine the NE2B's second-place team.

The Bulldogs secured an 8-2 victory handily, thanks to five runs in the seventh inning with Harper Booth, Delaney Imler and KeiLena Nelson each driving in runs.

Starting the game, the Bulldogs fired up offense with Booth singling.

The girls put up five runs in the seventh inning with Booth, Imler, and Nelson driving in runs into the frame.

Senior Jorja Koerner pitched the Colfax Bulldogs to victory, surrendering two runs on four hits over seven innings, striking out six, and walking zero.

Bird Denham, pitcher for Asotin, allowed eight runs on nine hits over seven innings, striking out seven.

The Bulldogs scored one home run - Booth had a four-bagger in the seventh inning.

Booth went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Colfax in hits.

Emily Elskamp led Asotin with two hits in three at bats.
