Koerner named WIAA Athlete of the Week

Bulldogs pitcher learned of award on social media

COLFAX – A Colfax girl has been named as the girls Class 2B statewide Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Athlete of the Week.

Jorja Koerner was awarded WIAA’s Athlete of the Week for her efforts on the Colfax Bulldogs girls fastpitch softball team.

The local girl found out about her award on a social media post in the morning and was “surprised and excited”.

“It feels awesome just to be known that I got it [recognition] and to be on a statewide Instagram page,” Koerner said.

Jorja Koerner is the daughter of Pete and Candace Koerner, owners of the Top Notch Cafe. When she’s not in school or pitching from the mound, she can often be found working at the family business at 210 N. Main St.

Jorja Koerner is in her senior year of high school at Colfax and was anonymously nominated for the honor last week.

“It was a total surprise to us,” Candace Koerner said.

For her last season at Colfax, Jorja Koerner has totaled 39 strikeouts as pitcher, 34 RBIs and a batting average of .556.

She signed to continue her softball career with Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Penn., this summer.

To be nominated, a student must show impact in the community and be in good academic standing.

“It was really cool. I got a certificate and a $25 gift card to Dicks Sporting Goods. I am really looking forward to state softball and getting to finish my senior year,” Jorja Koerner noted.
