Bulldogs sweep Davenport Gorillas

DAVENPORT – The Colfax Bulldogs swept a doubleheader against the Davenport Gorillas on the road April 2.

Colfax (3-2-1) won 19-0 and 15-4.

Davenport managed just four runs between two games against a tough Colfax pitching effort Saturday.

In the opener, the score went back and forth with both teams tied 4-4 at the bottom of the sixth inning.

Then the Bulldog bats came alive with Colfax scoring 11 runs in the top of the seventh inning to secure the 15-4 win, behind a home run, two triples and one double from catcher Braden Plummer (4).

Plummer (4) had 4 hits out of 5 times at-bat, which added 2 runs to the Bulldogs' score. He suffered 1 strikeout, but also hit a home run.

Alex Mortensen (6) led the Bulldogs with 3 runs from 1 hit and 2 strikeouts, out of 3 times at-bat, and 2 RBIs. He crossed home plate once himself.

Five Bulldogs added 2 runs each and two players added 1 each.

Colfax utilized three pitchers. J.D. Peterson (2) threw for 4 innings and had 8 strikeouts, 2 errors, 4 walks, and 2 runs scored on him.

Cody Inderrieden (3) threw for only two batters in a single inning, one for a strikeout and the other walked.

J.P. Widen (20) earned the win as he finished the last two innings, throwing 5 strikeouts while allowing 3 hits and 2 runs. He made 2 errors.

Pitching for Davenport, Denton Deal struck out 11 batters in six innings.

The second game was much less competitive, with Colfax scoring 19 runs in four innings to earn a mercy rule victory.

The Bulldogs' offense scored every inning and their defense shut down the Gorillas, allowing them only one hit but without a run.

Colfax started with 5 runs in the first, 1 in the second, 10 in the third, and 3 more in the fourth and final inning, Colfax Coach Scott Parish said.

Leading Colfax was left fielder Alex Mortensen (6) with 4 runs on 2 hits and 2 RBIs while batting twice.

Right fielder J.J. Bodey (7) got to bat twice and added 3 runs for the team with 2 hits driving in 2 RBIs and then making it across home plate himself once.

Four Bulldog players added 2 runs each and four others added 1 each.

Pitcher Mason Gilchrist (14) pitched all four innings allowing only one hit, no errors, no walks, no home runs, and racking up 6 strikeouts.

Colton vs. Colfax JV

In other local baseball, the Colton Wildcats varsity team topped the Colfax junior-varsity squad in a doubleheader March 31.

Colton won the opener, 5-3, and the closer, 9-7.

In the opener, Colton scored a run in the first, third and fifth innings to take a 3-0 lead.

But in the bottom of the 6th, Colfax responded with a run of its own.

Both Colton and the Colfax junior-varsity notched two more runs in the final inning for the 5-3 finish.

Colton was led by juniors Angus Jordan and Wyatt Jordan, who each scored two runs in the loss.

Junior Grant Wolf added another run. Wolf also had an RBI.

Teammate Dan Bell had 2 RBIs from four trips to the plate

Senior Kane Walker had the only stolen base for the Wildcats.

In the second game, Colton scored twice to open the first-inning scoring and Colfax answered with one run.

Both teams added another score in the 2nd inning.

In the fourth inning, the Colfax junior-varsity took the lead after the Wildcats only got one runner around the bases as the Bulldogs had 3 scores.

Colfax added one more run in the 5th inning for a 6-4 lead.

Colton's bats warmed in the 6th inning, with the Wildcats scoring 4 runs to regain the lead.

Both teams scored once in the 7th as the game ended 9-7.

Colton had 12 hits in the game and Colfax junior-varsity ad 7.

Colton had 5 errors to Colfax's 3.

Juniors Angus Jordan and Wyatt Jordan each scored 2 runs in the game, as did senior Raph Arnhold.

Both Jordans had a stolen base, as well.

Colton's other runs were scored by juniors Grant Wolf and Dan Belll, and sophmore Colton Pfaff. Wyatt Jordan and senior Jaxon Moehrle each had 2 RBIs.

Colfax's junior-varsity stats were not reported.
