The Gazette welcomes new college intern

Olivia Harnack

COLFAX - The Whitman County Gazette has a new editorial intern.

Olivia Harnack, 19, of Detroit, Mich., began her internship Monday, Feb. 21. She is currently a sophomore at the College for Creative Studies, majoring in digital film with an emphasis in business.

Harnack will be reporting on Colfax and Whitman County, including government, business, people, sports and community activities.

In addition to furthering her education, Harnack is in the process of joining the Army National Guard and expects to attend basic training later this summer, before returning to her studies.

Harnack grew up in the newspaper world. Her mother, Gretchen Mork, is a former reporter and photographer, and her father, Roger Harnack, is publisher of Free Press Publishing. Her flight in from Detroit "left her nervous, but excited for this internship," Harnack said. "I run a freelance business and am constantly working with private clients or businesses -- not so much print media that is as largely read as the local newspaper."

A Port Angeles native, Olivia Harnack assisted with Free Press Publishing coverage of Colfax, Cheney, Ritzville and the greater Palouse area over Christmas break and "fell in love with the community."

"I was so excited to see my photos, graphics and stories published," she said. "Seeing my work published and shared online reassures me. I am in the right line of work with how it connects so well to my life and college education."

Harnack already has years of experience in the digital film industry and has worked for many notable organizations such as Keller Williams and TedX. She hopes to be able to use some of her digital media skills to enhance the print coverage offered by The Gazette.

She has had many short films featured in festivals and galleries across the Midwest.

Her recent exploration into different digital mediums has brought her home to Washington to "see the world from a different lens," Harnack said, noting she's hoping readers will contact her with story ideas.

She can be reached at The Gazette office by calling 509-397-4333 or via email at [email protected].

Harnack encouraged her peers to apply for the internship, while also deciding to apply.

"I applied because I wanted to build skills and network more. I was nervous about where I wanted to go," she said. "Colfax welcomes everyone so warmly. How could I pass up the opportunity?"
