Timberwolves place at Pomeroy tournament

POMEROY - Four Tekoa-Rosalia wrestlers finished in the top four in their respective weight classes at the Pomeroy Christmas Tournament on Dec. 30.

In two instances, Timberwolves grappled teammates for a medal.

In the combined girls 135-145-pound weight division, freshman Alexis Taylor (10-1) took gold, while senior Jesse Casey (2-5) won silver.

In the boys 145-pound class, freshman Cullen Billings (4-5) won bronze as senior teammate Bryce Casey (3-6) took fourth.

Eight teams participated. More than that canceled due to a winter storm that blanketed much of Eastern Washington and dropped more than 8 inches of snow in Pomeroy during the tournament.

Pomeroy won the team title. Tekoa-Rosalia tied with Joseph, Ore., for fifth. Girls team points were not recorded.

Both Jesse Casey and Taylor earned a spot in the championship bout by pinning Cheyanna Starboard, of Union, Ore. In the championship match, Taylor pinned Jesse Casey in the third round.

In addition to the gold medal for first place, Taylor was crowned with a "Champion" Santa hat.

Taylor also wrestled an exhibition match against Union 170-pounder Jenna Denton, pinning her in the second round.

Casey also took on an extra match, but lost by fall in the first round to Dylan Rogers, of Joseph, Ore., the 126-pound champion.

At 145 pounds, Billings and Bryce Casey (3-6) each pinned Micah Vigil and Drake Broderson, of White Swan. They both lost to Wrangler Wagner, of Wilbur-Creston-Keller, and Walker Flynn, of Pomeroy, setting the stage for the medal matches.

Wagner defeated Flynn in a 10-7 decision to win gold. Flynn received silver.

In the final match of the tournament, Timberwolves Billings and Bryce Casey faced off for bronze.

At the end of the first round, the teammates were tied 4-4. At the end of the second, Billings had a 9-8 lead.

In the final period with Billings on his base, Bryce Casey got too high. Billings caught him with a head-and-arm for a late third-period pin.
