Fire damages Colfax home

COLFAX - A fire started behind a shut off oven that led to severe damage to a home on Dec. 28.

No one was home when the fire started, according to Colfax Fire Capt. Tim Tingley.

The fire is described as tragic as the home on State Route 272 belongs to Colfax City Clerk Lynda Cramlich, the daughter of former Colfax fire chief Jim Krouse. She lost her father to a heart attack while he was fighting a fire last August.

The fire started behind the oven, which was off while the home was empty, said Tingley.

About 30 firefighters from the Colfax Fire Department and Whitman County Fire District 11 spent eight hours fighting the fire and mopping up.

The home was heavily damaged from the fire, smoke, and water.

"They will have to tear it down," said Tingley.
