Colfax woman charged for stabbing

COLFAX — A visit to a friend’s apartment ended in a stabbing and arrests for a Colfax couple.

A 32-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman were visiting a friend at a Colfax apartment on Main Street on Dec. 19 at about 8 p.m. The friend told Colfax police she “knew there was going to be trouble.”

The man reportedly tackled the woman onto a bed then sat on the floor next to the bed, but the woman left the room and came back with a knife, according to the Colfax police report. The friend said the woman stabbed and slashed the man on the back.

The friend tackled the woman to make her stop and quickly left to call 9-1-1 from a neighbor’s home.

A Colfax officer and Whitman County sheriff’s deputy entered the apartment with permission and found the woman in the kitchen. The man was in the bathroom.

Laura M. Herrington, 24, of Colfax, was arrested and allegedly resisted being handcuffed while yelling loudly that she couldn’t be arrested because the victim initially said she didn’t do it, according to court records. He reportedly told the deputy he fell backward on something at first.

Herrington claimed she needed to be taken to the hospital because she was not mentally well, according to court records.

“When the (patrol) car door was closed, Herrington thrashed causing an injury,” wrote a deputy.

She was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Before she was booked into jail, a deputy noted her condition at the time.

“(She) admits drinking (and) appears overly excited and demonstrative indicating a possible stimulant,” wrote a Colfax officer.

An ambulance was summoned to take the man to the hospital for treatment then he was booked into jail for two warrants.

Charles M. Zimmerman, 32, of Colfax, was booked for a Whitman County District Court warrant for failing to appear regarding charges of harassment and possession of stolen property in the third degree. He had a second warrant from Colfax Municipal Court for failing to appear regarding charge of assault in the fourth degree – domestic violence.

Herrington and Zimmerman live together “and are friends.”

She was charged with assault in the second degree – using a deadly weapon – in Whitman County Superior Court on Dec. 22.
