Lenticular Cloud

A lenticular cloud hangs low over Steptoe Butte on Nov. 10. Photographer Casey Lowder said the clouds are rare and exceptionally fleeting. The name 'lenticular' refers to the lens-shaped character of the cloud that forms in air currents resulting from wind across large obstructions like Steptoe Butte, but only under very limited atmospheric conditions. This photo was taken on State Route 195 between Colfax and Steptoe.
