Colfax football takes the dog fight

KETTLE FALLS - It was Bulldogs versus Bulldogs with Colfax winning the football game beating Kettle Falls 50-0 on Oct. 8.

"They never got within scoring distance," said Colfax Coach Mike Morgan. "We had the ball a ton more than they did."

The first Colfax touchdown came on an 11-yard run by Mason Gilchrist. A 2-point conversion was added by a pass from Damian Demler to Seth Lustig to make the score 8-0.

The second touchdown was a 6-yard run by Gilchrist. Demler threw another successful 2-point conversion to move the score to 16-0.

The third first-quarter touchdown was Ryan Henning running 44 yards for a touchdown. Trentin Ensley ran in the 2-point conversion to make the score 24-0.

The second quarter held two more touchdowns for Colfax with the first on a 6-yard run by Ensley. He also ran in the 2-point conversion.

The next touchdown was Demler running it in from 2 yards out to add 6 points. He later passed to Garrett Dingman for the 2-point conversion to leave the score 42-0 at halftime.

"Both quarters ran really quick and we got our young guys in the second half," said Morgan.

The change-up slowed the scoring for Colfax. They scored one more touchdown in the second half. In the fourth quarter, Zachary Cooper ran 60 yards for the final touchdown. Cooper also ran in the 2-point conversion to leave the score 50-0.

"We kept the ball on the ground. We threw eight times in the game because we didn't need to," said Morgan. "We averaged 8.9 yards per play versus their 1.7 yards."

The 306 yards on offense of the 390 total yards for Colfax came from the running game.

Demler threw 5 completed passes out of 7 attempts for 84 yards.

"We did what we do best. We ground out the yards and ground out the time, and gave them very few opportunities to score," said Morgan. "Kettle is young and inexperienced. They have five seniors on the team, but Kettle will get better."

Friday Colfax hosts Chewelah for the homecoming game and senior night. They have six seniors. They are Wyatt Bodey (9), Ryan Henning (10), Ryan Baljo (24), Dingman (6), Demler (15), and Ensley (43).

Chewelah is expected to try and spread Colfax out, run into the gaps, and throw the ball downfield. On defense, they will run a 5-3 man defense that's designed to stop the run.

"To have success against Chewelah, we have to match their physicality," said Morgan. "Our young guys are getting better and better."

The team is matching up size and experience in practice to prepare for the bigger more experienced teams like Chewelah.

"We're expecting the same type of fireworks. We're expecting this game to come down to the wire as it has for years and years," said Morgan.
