State offers septic loans

OLYMPIA – The state now offers loans to homeowners to repair or replace septic systems in Whitman County.

The state Department of Ecology (DOE) expanded the Regional On-Site Sewage System Loan Program state-wide, adding 17 counties to this loan program, according to a spokesperson.

"Approximately a third of Washington homes use septic systems for wastewater treatment. ... Failing septic systems can result in sewage backing up in the home or entering local waterways and groundwater supplies posing a public health threat," stated the spokesperson.

The program provides access to affordable financing for repairs or replacement of septic systems.

Homeowners can apply for a by visiting the website Craft3. Commercial properties and non-owner-occupied properties may also qualify.

"Statewide access to this program is a win for homeowners, public health, and clean water,' said Vince McGowan, water quality program manager for DOE. "When a failing septic system is fixed, the benefits go beyond the home. This program supports healthy shellfish and fisheries, and helps ensure Washingtonians have access to swimming beaches and recreation."

The Regional On-Site Sewage System Loan Program helped nearly 1,200 homeowners using $26.7 million for the last five years.
