The Colfax Bulldogs breaks out for a run against Lake Roosevelt.

COLFAX - The Raiders went home empty-handed after the Colfax Bulldogs football team beat them, 30-0 on Sept. 17.

"I wasn't sure how this game was going to be on Friday," said Colfax Coach Mike Morgan. "They were the eighth-ranked team in the state ... I am really pleased with our effort."

The first score of the game came in the second quarter as Colfax's Damian Demler passed to JD Peterson for a 43-yard touchdown. The 2-point conversion attempt failed.

In the third quarter, the Bulldogs ran for two touchdowns. Demler scrambled and broke out to run 46 yards into the end zone. He threw a pass to Mason Gilchrist for the 2-point conversion pushing the score to 14-0.

Colfax's Wyatt Bodey ran for 21 yards to score another touchdown in the third quarter. Demler followed the run with a pass to Peterson for the 2-point conversion. The score was 22-0.

"We were getting stuffed all the time until we got those breakout runs," said Morgan. "We came out in the third quarter ... and we drove down and scored and then on-side kicked them and got the ball back again and scored again. That broke their back."

The final score of the game was a 44 yard run by Gilchrist for another touchdown. Trentin Ensley ran the ball in for the 2-point conversion leaving the score 30-0.

"Our kids are in great physical shape and I think our running game wore them down. Our defense wore them down. The long runs caught up with them," Morgan said.

The team is improving and Morgan said they are starting to understand the system better. When Lake Roosevelt was jamming the box to prevent Colfax from running, the Bulldogs were able to adjust and have breakout runs to score.

"We still have a lot of work ahead of us and when we come back on Monday it's business as usual," said Morgan.

Coming off the win, Morgan said he has a page of notes on how to improve for the upcoming game with the Asotin Panthers (2-1).

Asotin has a history of beating Colfax except for the last two times they played. The Panthers recently beat the Reardan Indians 31-0.

"They're an extremely difficult team to prepare for," said Morgan. "We're expecting a dog and cat fight. We're expecting a showdown this Friday."
