Presentation offered on Washington earthquakes

August 26, 2021

RITZVILLE — Information on two big earthquakes in Eastern Washington is presented on Sept. 30 in Ritzville.

“Many of us have heard about ‘the big one’” that will someday happen in western Washington, but earthquakes happen in Eastern Washington too. Two of the major, historically recorded earthquakes happened in Eastern Washington,” said Lloyd Stoess, chapter president for the Ice Age Floods Institute – Palouse Falls Chapter.

The free program offers information on the earthquakes, why they happen, the effect of ice-age deposits, and how to prepare for the next big one.

Presenter and geophysicist Megan Anderson works at the Washington Geological Survey. She studied subduction zones and earthquakes in South America for her doctorate and taught for 10 years at Colorado College in Colorado Springs.

“She now is back in the Pacific Northwest because it is a fascinating place where there is so much left to discover,” said Stoess.

The free program is on Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. in the Ritzville Theater at 107 E. Main Street.
