The new dark green façade for the Council on Aging is nearly complete.

COLFAX - A new look takes shape for the Whitman County Council on Aging and Human Services and COAST Transportation offices on Main Street in Colfax.

The work replaces a brown metal facade and cracked stucco sides. The new front of the building features an overhang in the dark green color of the department's logo.

The agencies are using a $9,000 grant from the Colfax Downtown Association to pay for part of the work.

Local contractor Andy Gylling began the project on July 5 and is working at night.

"It looks a whole lot better even if he stopped right now," said Paige Collins, executive director of the Council on Aging and COAST.

The work has a completion deadline of July 15.

The downtown association streamlined its storefront grant program earlier this year. It's funded using $38,500 from Whitman County's annual .09 economic development fund.

The new application process did not require a bid from a professional contractor. The association assembled a group of eight contractors to judge bids and work for the projects.

The 25% matching funds program is intended to cover contracted labor and services, materials, and permitting fees for such things as exterior lighting, exterior signs, landscaping, and storefront facade restoration work.
