The tradition of marking veterans' graves with flags resumed this year.

COLFAX - A Memorial Day ceremony is in its 31st year when it occurs on May 31.

It begins at 10 a.m. in the veterans' circle.

Hundreds of flags are set out around the cemetery.

The event is put on by many volunteers, including Colfax Junior-Senior High School FFA advisor Michael Heitstuman and his students, who help put up the flags and take them down.

Cemetery Sexton Joe Rupe and his part-time staff also volunteer, as well as members of the American Legion, Craig Willson, and staff members of Bruning Funeral Home.

The Memorial Day flag program began in 1990, with 17 flags. This year the number will be 295.
