COLFAX – A little bit goes a long way to help people end or avoid opioid drug abuse.

Lorien Smith, Miss Colfax for America Strong 2021, is organizing a "Fill the Boot" fundraiser and awareness building event in Colfax on May 16. The event runs from 1 to 3 p.m. in the parking lot next to Rosauers grocery store at 632 N. Main Street, Colfax.

"This will be the first time I have organized one," Smith said. "I am literally just making this up as I go."

She's asking people to drive by and drop a donation into collection boots carried by a few pageant members and firefighters.

Money donated is going to Victoria's Voice Foundation, which was started by the founders' because their daughter died of opioid addiction.

The foundation provides information about opioid addiction, prevention programs for teenagers, informational speakers, and helps supply ambulances with Narcan, a drug to save people from overdosing on narcotics.

"They are the state and national charity for the pageant system," said Miss Colfax.

Prevention of opioids fits her pageant platform and her time with the Colfax Fire Department.

"A large part of our job is public outreach for prevention," Smith said of her job as an EMT.
