New bakery opens in the Mercantile

COLFAX - Sugar Babe bakery is the latest offering at the Colfax Mercantile.

It opened on April 16 and offers items made on the premises such as cookies, pastries, scones, cinnamon rolls, and more, with vegan and gluten-free options.

Owned and operated by Melanie Voorhees and her wife Dani, the business began with Melanie baking items at home to sell to support a non-profit she co-founded with Dani. It helps cover the costs for people's emergency pet expenses.

Melanie and Dani moved to Colfax last year. Dani runs Zelda's Pet Grooming in Pullman.

Sugar Babe took over the Mercantile spot vacated by Double J Ranch cookies, which moved out at the end of March.

"They've brought in a lot of people from Moscow and Pullman and the valley," said Val Gregory, who runs Home Sweet Home in the Mercantile. "So it's great, new customers."

Hours for Sugar Babe are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays.
