Downtown association streamlines storefront remodel grant program

Grant applications are accepted until March 26

March 18, 2021

COLFAX — The Colfax Downtown Association announced a Rural Regeneration Project Grant with applications due March 26.

The funding is offered to Colfax business owners or building owners to improve storefronts in an effort to lift the aesthetic value of Main Street and the downtown corridor.

Association Executive Director Whitney Bond noted the application process is simplified to make it easier than previous storefront grant programs from the association.

A bid from a professional is not required to be attached this time.

The association assembled a group of eight contractors, from builders and painters to electricians and design specialists, to handle all bids and work for these projects.

“That list is growing,” said Bond.

The work is funded by $38,500 from Whitman County’s annual .09 economic development fund, announced for 2020.

The 25 percent-match program aims to cover contracted labor and services, materials and permitting fees for exterior lighting, exterior signage, landscaping and/or potted flowers, storefront facade restoration work, window replacement or repairs, historical preservation and curb appeal work.

The size of individual grants is expected to vary, based on how many applications are received.

“We’re asking (applicants) to rank their priorities, so hopefully we can hit one to two priorities of as many businesses as possible,” Bond said.

Applicants must have an active business occupying the building.

“We believe over time these improvement efforts are going to majorly enhance the aesthetic of our Main Street and downtown corridor and create a more attractive and vibrant atmosphere that draws in more tourism and repeat foot traffic as well as an overall boost in economic growth here in Colfax,” Bond said.

For more information call Bond at 509-288-9063.
