Colfax blows out Asotin, meets Reardan Friday
Bulldogs on winning streak against Panthers
March 11, 2021
COLFAX — Bulldog Jacob Brown followed running 26 yards in the Liberty game to carry the ball 167 yards for five touchdowns in a 44-0 win over Asotin.
Brown is a 6-foot, 220-pound senior fullback.
"Our kids played really well, and Asotin was really down," said Colfax Coach Mike Morgan. "They just didn't have the horsepower to go against us."
The March 5 game included two Colfax onside kicks for two quick touchdowns.
A long, opening pass from quarterback Layne Gingerich to Gavin Shrope set up the first touchdown with Brown taking the ball out wide for the end zone.
His running set the tone for the game.
"Jacob Brown could've run all night. He's got dudes up front that were ... opening holes," Morgan said.
It was Colfax's other quarterback, Damien Demler, throwing to Garrett Dingman to make it 34-0 in the third quarter.
On the next drive, Brown ran across the goal line again to make it 44-0, taking an added push from an Asotin player.
Getting up in the end zone grass, Brown turned around.
"What are you going to do about it?" asked the Asotin lineman, lightly, as he walked away.
"Hey, we're getting our a---s kicked," said an Asotin defensive back. "We ain't got much to say anymore."
In the end, Brown averaged 10.4 yards per carry. Bulldogs' sophomore Mason Gilchrist and junior Trentin Ensley took turns with Brown rushing.
Gingerich passed 7-for-10 for 101 yards in the game with a touchdown. Demler went 3-for-5 and a touchdown.
Demler shares time with Gingerich in a dual quarterback system Morgan is running for the first time since the mid-2000s.
"We try to get as many guys into the game as possible. We've got many great athletes we don't want standing by the coaches on the sidelines. I've got two outstanding talents at quarterback," said the coach. "I think you'll see this from me the rest of the year."
The two quarterbacks played about equal time against Asotin, with Gingerich taking more snaps against Liberty.
"I thought Layne had a hot hand so we stayed with him more that night," Morgan said.
Keys to their win included Colfax players appearing bigger than their opponents. The Panthers were missing a couple players to injury and opt-outs for the unusual spring season.
Asotin had beaten the Bulldogs for six straight years until last year. They ended Colfax's seasons three times in the first round of the playoffs from 2016 to 2018.
The game was senior night for Gingerich, Brown, Shrope, Caden Noha, Kolby Slate, Anthony Becker, Braeden Rogers, Isaac Anderson, Dustin Broeckel and Kyle Dail.
Preparing for the Reardan Indians (2-0) this Friday at home, the Colfax passing game may come more into play.
"They're going to stack that box, make it impossible for us to run," Morgan said. "If they stop the run, we've got to go to the pass. If they stop the pass, we've got to go to the run. If they stop both, we're going to get beat."
Reardan runs a wishbone offense, something Bulldogs grappled with in their matchups, which have ended in one-score margins for nine of the past 10 years.
"They're going to pound that rock at us," said Morgan. "If (Coach Eric Nikkola) gets 5-6-7 yards, he'll run the same play seven times in a row – Until you stop it."
