Council discusses streets for transportation plan

COLFAX — A coming six-year transportation plan for Colfax will focus on a list of streets for future work, including Fairview, Morton, First, Valley View, the Moller-Cromwell intersection, Lake Street greenway, by the old railroad, and Palouse River Road.
City councilman Jim Kackman suggested adding Hillcrest Street at the council’s regular meeting Tuesday night.
City Public Works Director Matt Hammer concurred and said he would add it to the list.
The council then set a public hearing for March 1 for the six-year plan, which is used in the grant application process for the state Department of Transportation.
As far as Palouse River Road, the suggestion was made that it would be paved.
“I’ve got no intention of us ever paving that road,” said Kackman, acknowledging that if a large grant came through it would change the matter.
Councilman Mark Mackleit asked about North Palouse River Road, saying he gets more comments from people about that than anything else, regarding the city.
Discussion followed and may continue March 1 as the public will also have a chance to give input.
In other public works news, the department bought a used 2007 plow truck for $18,500 from the Walla Walla WSDOT shop.
The department had budgeted $40,000 for the purchase of the vehicle.
