December 31, 2020

OAKESDALE—Whitman County Sheriff’s deputies responded to an attempted murder-suicide of a couple in their 80s Saturday shortly after 1 p.m.

According to Sheriff Brett Myers, the husband called 911 after shooting his wife to report it. When deputies arrived, they contacted an 83 year old female laying on the front entry of her home suffering from serious injuries consistent with a gunshot wound to the face. She is believed to have been shot in the mouth area two times.

The woman was able to tell deputies she had been shot by her husband whom she believed then shot and killed himself, a Sheriff’s Office press release said.

Deputies entered the home and found the victim’s 82 year old husband deceased from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, according the the release. The female victim was transported to Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane via ambulance where she underwent emergency surgery. She is expected to recover from her injuries.

The case is still under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office and Coroner.

The last murder-suicide case in Whitman County was in August 2017 in Hay.
