Grants of $5,000 awarded to 13 Whitman County microenterprises affected by COVID-19

Businesses with up to five employees provided help for COVID-19 impacts

Microenterprise grants totaling $65,000 have been awarded by Community Action Center to 13 eligible small businesses that have been affected by the pandemic and Washington Stay Home restrictions.

The businesses include one each in St. John and Palouse, five in Colfax and seven in Pullman, including such businesses as a small convenience store, a microbrewery and a consignment clothing store.

“It seems appropriate to see these grants go to business owners who are having the most difficult time in our area. For some, this will be the difference between re-opening in the fall or choosing to close permanently,” said Jeff Guyett, Community Action Center Executive Director. “With all the difficult news we hear, it is so encouraging to be just a small movement toward building our local economy back up.”

More than $80,000 in grant funds were made available from the Washington Department of Commerce’s Community Development Block Grant, targeted to help businesses adapt and survive difficulties they have faced because of COVID-19 closures and restrictions. Community Action Center is awarding the grants on behalf of Whitman County.

Unlike many other forms of assistance being offered to businesses, these grant funds are based on COVID-19 impact to both the business and to the owner’s personal household income.

The COVID-19 Microenterprise funding included a competitive grant application process with these 13 businesses, each with no more than five full-time employees, who met the eligibility requirements and were awarded $5,000 each.

Second-round applications are available at Community Action Center’s website, http://www.cacwhitman.org, and the Pullman, Colfax, and Palouse Chambers of Commerce, or request by email at [email protected].
