Summer baseball starts

The AAA (19-under) Palouse Coyotes have begun playing independent summer baseball, five games in after the American Legion canceled its regular program in April due to the virus.

The Palouse team is led by Kevin Agnew, Pullman High School coach, and features six players from Colfax, including Big Bend Community College’s Kelen Becker and Nate Akesson, along with younger boys Nate Akesson, Eric Akesson, Layne Gingerich, Sam Kopp and Kolby Sisk.

They opened last week with five games against the same team; LC19U, from Lewiston-Clarkston.

On July 1, the two teams played a doubleheader at Church Field in Lewiston – no fans allowed in the stands due to COVID-19. The Coyotes lost 3-1 and 17-7. The next day, in another doubleheader at the same field, Palouse won the first 11-6 and lost the second, 15-4. On July 3, back again, the Coyotes beat LCU19 14-2.

Palouse is set to play Wednesday at Moscow.
