Groundbreaking ceremonies on the first stage of a $500,000 grain terminal development were held Tuesday at Central Ferry. The terminal will be constructed by Western Grain Exchange of Great Falls, Mont.

Western is the second firm to start construction of a terminal at Port Central Ferry. Western Farmers Association started construction in April.

Russell Woolcock, president of the Western Grain Exchange, said the firm's first-stage development will involve a 230,000-bushel crib type elevator with 20 bins of various sizes. Expected to be ready by Sept. 1, the elevator will have a truck intake capacity of 15,000 bushels per hour and be capable of delivering 30,000 bushels per hour to barges.

The government loan rate on wheat will be unchanged for this year's crop, Chairman Joris Walli of the county ASC committee, announced this week.

Wheat produced in Whitman County under the certificate program will be eligible for government loan or purchase at a rate of $1.26 per bushel (farm stored), the same as the 1969 program.

The rate is based on the national average loan level of $1.25 per bushel, announced last August. This year's county rate has been determined individually after extended public discussion and consultation, Walli said, taking into consideration terminal market price relationships, cash prices received by farmers and export market movements.

West's Food Store closed its doors last Saturday, ending 85 years of groceries in the town of Palouse.

Dale West, former owner of the store, said he closed the store because there was, “too much expense and not enough revenue.”

West said he is moving to Coeur D'Alene, to work at Super One, saying that, “If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.”

When asked where the people of Palouse are going to shop for groceries, West said, “Where they've been shopping, not in Palouse.”

Dianne Cooper and her husband John recently bought the vacated food store.
