Library Summer Reading Program underway, with some changes

The Whitman County Library's Summer Reading Program commenced June 1 with no in-person performances this year but some substitutes.

The 10-books-or-10-hours-to-get-a-free-book activity for kids continues while previous summers' visiting jugglers, storytellers, magicians and other exhibitors are cancelled.

“It is a lot different this year,” said Sheri Miller, the library's youth services manager/associate director.

Once statewide clearances allow, the Summer Reading Program will add a curbside element in which staff will give to-go bags to kids, with items such as crafts, tangrams, temporary tattoos and more.

The Traveling Lantern Theater group, which in previous years has visited to perform at library branches, will offer an online production.

“To see if people aren't totally done with online learning and entertainment,” said Miller.

Some county branches will also offer “I-Spy”-like scavenger hunts for kids.

The 10 books-10 hours challenge will be expanded to the end of August this year, instead of concluding in mid-August.

The adult Summer Reading program has also begun, not affected by the virus restrictions. The theme this year is “Imagine Your Story.”
