Mt. St. Helens - Then & Now

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens in Washington, an event that was the worst US volcanic disaster in recorded history. Geologist Sheila Alfsen (MAT, GIT) will bring the event back to life detailing its onset and eruption sequence in two free presentations.

The presentation is at the Whitman County Library in Colfax on April 25 at 10 a.m. and Ritz Theatre on April 24 at 7 p.m, 107 E. Main, Ritzville.

This lecture will illustrate the volcanic hazards with examples from other volcanoes and compare their relative sizes. Alfsen will discuss the advances volcanology has made as a result of the eruption and how they are used around the world to gain prediction and offer disaster mitigation.

Alfsen has 30 years in education and experience in interpretation for the National Park Service. She is currently an instructor of Geology at Portland State University, Chemeketa Community College and Linn Benton Community College. She is a researcher; works as a FEMA earthquake publication reviewer; develops curriculum and courses for Portland State University; is the president of Geologic Society of the Oregon Country (Portland); works as a professional consultant; and guides helicopter tours of Mt. St. Helens. She is currently a member of the Geologic Society of America, a National Association of Geoscience Teachers Lecturer and an Association for Women Geoscientists Distinguished Lecturer.
