Colfax edges TR with double OT comeback

Colfax and Tekoa/Rosalia rattled through two overtimes Tuesday in the first league match of the season for the boys at Colfax. The Bulldogs, who trialed the Timberwolves through most of the game, pulled it out with foul shots in the second OT for a 72-68 final score.

Colfax sophomore John Lustig, who finished with 44 points, hit two toss shots and Layne Gingerich hit one of two to get the four point edge in the final seconds.

At the end of the first overtime Lustig hit a reverse hook along the baseline to tie it up at 63-63 after TR's Garrett Naught hit a jumper for a 63-61 edge with 16.5 seconds left.

In regular time, Naught put TR on top by hitting a pair of toss shots with 20.3 left. That put it at 57-54, but Lustig went to the line on an intentional foul call against TR and potted all three toss shots for a 57-57 tie.

Colfax took a four-point lead in the first OT, but the T-wolves came back with Riley McLain dropping a pair of toss shots and Anthony Gehring hitting a bucket for a 61-61.

Tekoa/Rosalia pulled away early in the first quarter and posted a 25-14 gap early in the second quarter when Riley McLain hit two three-point shots.

They started the second half with Anthony Gehring hitting a trey shot and Naught dropping a bucket for a 39-28 lead with five minutes left in the third quarter.

Colfax still trailed by seven with 1:26 left in regular time, and TR was on the brink of restoring a 10-point lead, but that bucket was erased on a goal tending call.

They still had a 57-54 edge in the last 20 seconds before Lusting went to the line and dropped the triple toss shots.

Tuesday's double OT thriller was the third straight Colfax game decided in the final seconds. Saturday Colfax lost at St. Geore's when the Dragons scored in the final 10 seconds of the game, and Friday on the home court they staged another huge charge after the Columbia Coyotes of Burbank put them in a deep hole.

Saturday at St. Georges, the Bulldogs trailed by eight points at the half, but launched a big charge in the third quarter with Lustig hitting 10 of 19 team points for the frame.

St. Geroge's took a slight edge in the fourth quarter and the game went down to a 52-52 tie with 10 seconds left.

Dragon veteran Dan Rigsby took the ball down the court and scored for the decider in the 54-52 win by the Dragons.

Rigsby and Lustig each finish with 17 points.

At Colfax Friday, Colfax and Burbank tied at 30-30 for the first half, but the Coyotes rolled out a 54-43 lead after the third quarter.

Lustig, who finish with 47 points against the Coyotes, booked 16 points in the last quarter charge for a 67-all tie to send it into overtime.

Lustig hit a bucket to get the Colfax lead, and added two toss shots for a 71-67 gap.

Burbank's Creed Pariera answered with a bucket and a toss shot to finally break the Coyotes out of their 67-point lockup.

Lustig came back with two more toss shots for a 75-70 lead with 1:04 left, but Justin Koopman hit on a putback to get the Coyotes within a point with 38 seconds left.

Lustig again went to the line and hit two more for the 75-72 gap with 34 seconds left. It went down to the final seconds, and Coyote senior Brennan Wickstrom took an inbounds feed and hit a trey which would have tied the game at 75-75, but he was called for traveling and that was it.
