Senior meal changes set for 2020

Changes in senior meal service around the county are scheduled to go into effect at the start of the new year. The Council on Aging plans to drop the meal service in Rosalia, expand the service at Colfax to twice a week and introduce meals at Endicott twice a month.

Paige Collins, executive director for the council, said the Rosalia service will cease at the end of the year because of low attendance. The numbers at the Rosalia site had dropped down to a core of approximately nine people.

“That made it hard for us financially to send a cook up there each week,” she said.

The Rosalia seniors have been advised that the council will provide a Coast van to shuttle any or all of the group to one of the council’s other meal sites.

Colfax will now serve meals on Mondays and Thursdays beginning with the new year. Collins noted many of the take-out meals that have been provided to seniors after the weekly Wednesday sessions wind up being consumed at home as dinners that night or as lunch the next day.

“The seniors needed more meals offered. I think they’ll take advantage of both days in the new year, and they can still take some to go,” Collins reported.

Meal service will be introduced at Endicott twice a month starting next year. Collins noted the Endicott meal service will be in a test phase.

The council offers meals at LaCrosse every two weeks, and that could expand to once a week in the coming year, she added.
