Past due property tax reminders sent out in county
December 12, 2019
At Monday’s Whitman County commissioner workshop, County Treasurer Chris Nelson gave an update regarding delinquent accounts for this tax season.
Delinquent accounts occur when a due date for a tax return has passed and the amount due remains unpaid.
“Last week we sent out about 1,500 postcards to folks whose accounts show as delinquent,” Nelson said. “We have been very busy these past few days.”
Nelson said thus far they have collected over $60,000 in delinquent taxes from those paying online.
Through the Whitman County website, county residents can look up their taxes and also pay their taxes online. This feature can be found through the “treasurer” tab on the website.
Taxpayers are advised to have the owner code and parcel number on hand before paying taxes online. The code and numbers are on the tax statement along with the amount due.
A convenience fee based on the amount of the transaction will be added for online tax payments. A credit card percentage fee of 2.5 percent of the amount charged will be added.
Paying with a debit card or E-Check is just a flat rate. Debit cards have a $3.95 flat fee and E-Checks have a $2.00 flat fee.
“A lot of people have been thankful we’ve sent out the postcards and some that aren’t so happy,” Nelson reported.
