Colfax boys launch year with two big wins

With a new lineup of starters on the court, Colfax boys proved up in a big way over the weekend with two big wins.

Friday, Colfax rolled south and clubbed Pomeroy 74-39, and Saturday they opened their home hoop run with a 73-64 win over the Lakeside Eagles from Nine Mile, an A division team.

The win over the Eagles came with an attack which included 13 three-point shots. John Lustig and Layne Gingerich each plunked five three-pointers against the Eagles. A sophomore, Lustig also plunked 9-9 from the toss line and finished with 30 total points.

Hunter Claassen hit two three-pointers, and Cole Baerlocher hit the other Colfax long shot.

Colfax and the Eagles tied at 26-26 after the first half before the three-pointers rained down in the third quarter.

Lustig hit one with 4:28 left in the third. Claassen, Gingerich, Baerlocher and Lustig each followed with a threebie and Claassen finished the run with two toss shots to round out a 53-39 lead.

The Eagles bounced back in the last quarter and tied the game at 58-58.

Lustig had picked up a fourth foul, and Coach Reece Jenkin held him out until late in the last quarter and then put him back in action to help hold off a charge by the Eagles.

Lakeside's final threat came when their guard, Javon Williams, hit three toss shots on an intentional foul call against the Bulldogs. Williams finished with a game-high 34.

That put the score at 63-61 before Lustig and Blake Holman hit buckets and Lustig picked up two more foul shots on the way to the 73-64 Colfax win.

Friday at Pomeroy the Bulldogs posted the 74-39 win in their season opener. Lustig also hit five three-pointers at Pomeroy and finished with 29. Colfax rolled to a 40-17 lead in the first half.

Next hoop action for the Bulldogs will be a visit here by Columbia of Burbank Friday for another non-leaguer. They will travel to St. George's Saturday for a NE league north side sampler.
