Colfax nips Colton to start season

Colfax Bulldog girls posted an early lead, faded in the second quarter and then won a race in the second half to pull out a 50-46 win over Colton Tuesday on the Wildcats’ home court. The game was a season opener for both teams.

Colton hosted Colfax as the defending champions from last year’s 1B campaign, but Coach Clark Vining and crew are starting the season after five members of the title team departed last spring with diplomas.

Colfax opened with a 16-7 lead in the first quarter, but the Wildcats came charging back in the second frame and posted a 28-25 lead at the break.

The Bulldogs regained the lead in the third quarter and had a six-point lead in the top of the last quarter. They had a 47-41 edge with 3:37 left, and Colton erased it with a run of five toss shots. Maggie Meyer and Megan Kay each his two.

They put the Colfax lead at 47-46, and Josie Schultheis grabbed a steal for the Wildcats but lost it.

Colton was forced to foul to get the ball, and Asher Cai plunked three toss shots to finish out the 50 points for the Bulldogs.

Cai led all scorers with 18.

Maggie Meyer led Colton with 16 points.

Coach Corey Baerlocher and crew returned to action Tuesday after losing just two players, Rachel Brown and Taylre Sakamoto-Howell, to graduation.

Colfax teams will play at Pomeroy Friday and then return home to play the Lakeside Eagles for the home opener Saturday.
