Eva May Hendrickson

Eva May Hendrickson, 95, passed away peacefully at her home in Colfax, Wash., on Monday, October 7, 2019.

She was born to Leon and May Cay in Moscow, Idaho, on July 31, 1924, and was their only child. She is the granddaughter of Latah county farm pioneers. She lived there and attended Moscow schools until age 14, when her family moved to Palouse, Wash. She graduated from Palouse High School in 1942, then attended the University of Idaho.

She married Martin Hendrickson on June 7, 1948, and they made their home on their farm in Garfield, Wash., where they lived together for the next 53 years. Martin passed away in 2001, and Eva May remained on the farm.

In addition to helping run the farm, Eva May worked at the Garfield post office for 25 years, and was an active member of the community. She enjoyed being a 4-H leader, and was a member of the Palouse Empire Fair Board for 12 years, serving as the president for four of those years. She was also a long time member of the Ladow Grange.

Eva May had many hobbies and was always busy working on one project or another. She enjoyed gardening, quilting, sewing, all kinds of other needle working, and was renowned for her wonderful cooking. She kept a cookie jar on the counter in her kitchen and everyone that came to visit knew they would find irresistible cookies inside. She was famous for her pies and cakes, and once won the Washington State Champions Award for bread baking.

She loved spending as much time as possible with her family. She also loved spending time with her friends and was a member of two bridge clubs. Eva May and Martin enjoyed fishing and spent many days together with family and friends at Lake Pend Oreille.

Eva May was preceded in death by her husband, Martin Hendrickson; and her son, Paul Hendrickson. Survivors include Paul's wife, Joan Hendrickson, of Garfield, Wash; her son, Fred Hendrickson and wife, Cindy, of Colfax, Wash; her six grandchildren, Shelli Smick, Kellen Smick, Lacee Hendrickson, Lilli Hendrickson, Kristie Hendrickson and Eric Hendrickson; her five great-grandchildren; and many grand-nieces and nephews.

A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held Saturday, November 9, at 2 p.m., at the Garfield Christian Church located at 303 N Third Street in Garfield, Wash.

Memorial gifts may be given to the Garfield-Farmington EMTs or to the charity of the donor's choice.
