Palouse Advocacy League observes Mental Health Day

In observance of World Mental Health Day, volunteers with the Palouse Advocacy League are scheduled to greet Lincoln Middle School Students in Pullman today, Oct. 10, and give them muffins, suicide prevention wallet cards, prevention refrigerator magnets and handmade positive affirmation rocks, all in an effort to let students know somebody cares about their well-being and mental health.

“It’s important to let our youth know that they are cared for and that there will always be somebody willing to listen to them, especially when they’re feeling low,” League President Shelley Calissendorff said

The refrigerator magnets list the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline number and the Crisis Text Line number among other resources. The two resources have trained professionals on the other end that respond to calls and texts 24/7 and who can help them find a local therapist.

The Palouse Advocacy League publishes a comprehensive and up-to-date guide that lists all of the mental health providers in Whitman and Latah counties. Copies of the guide will be available to anybody wanting one and can be downloaded for free at http://www.facebook.com/PalouseAdvocacyLeague.

Suicide is the second cause of death for youths ages 10 through 14, nationally, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
