County Public Works converts to winter operation hours

October 10, 2019

Whitman County Public Works Department will move approximately 50 of its 72 employees to winter hours Nov. 4, switching back to five eight-hour days after the summer schedule of four 10-hour days. Most of the road crews and engineers have been on since daylight savings in March.

Also in preparation for winter, Brandon Kruger, operations manager for road/bridge maintenance, sent out annual “snow letters” Monday to area school superintendents and transportation supervisors, as well as post office officials.

The letters outline priority of roads for plowing in the event of snow. First priority, as before, is paved roads, followed by remaining school bus and mail routes. Third priority is other access routes.

For gravel roads overall, they will not be plowed unless there is six inches of snow or drifting conditions.

Weekend work will be decided by road superintendents, depending on snow conditions.

Only in limited circumstances will the county close roads.
