SJEL beats Colton to start season

The Eagles opened with a victory for the 2019 football season. St. John/Endicott/LaCrosse beat Colton 48-26 at Colton Sept. 6.

The win matched the Eagles’ total wins for last year (not counting a forfeit).

“It was nice,” said coach Rich Hallenius. “Understatement of the year. This is the start we wanted.”

St. John/Endicott/ LaCrosse ran the ball most of the game, passing just 14 times.

Senior Chais Anderson led with 190 yards rushing on 18 carries with two touchdowns. Doug Stach, a junior, had 96 yards on 12 carries, with two touchdowns.

“Basically really good blocking from our front line,” said Hallenius. “And the running backs made some good decisions.”

One of the lineman, Kameron Greenhalgh, scored a touchdown off of an onside kick in the first quarter, taking the ball 51 yards to the end zone.

For Colton (0-1), its new quarterback, senior Chris Wolf threw 12-for-27 for 227 yards and a touchdown. He ran for 195 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries. Trent Druffel caught eight passes for 144 yards and a touchdown.

Colton scored first in the game but SJEL took the lead by the end of the first quarter and kept it to the end.

New Eagles quarterback Dylan Campbell, a senior, threw five completions in his 14 attempts for 29 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 53 yards.

St. John/Endicott/ LaCrosse will play next at LaCrosse Friday for a home game against Lyle/Wishram. Game time is 7 p.m. Colton will play again at home Friday against DeSales. Kickoff is also at 7 p.m.
