Rights

In response to Mr. Carl M. Ogren’s anti-gun rant in last week's WCG, please allow me to paraphrase Voltaire when he said “I wholly disapprove of what you say―but will defend to the death your right to say it.”

Yes, I know there is some disagreement on whether or not Voltaire used those words or whether that was an attitude summary given by Evelyn Beatrice Hall in 1906. In either case it was a noble ideal expressed well.

My paraphrase…not so much. But here it goes anyway: I wholly disagree with what Mr. Ogren said, but with my “assault rifle” (the definition of which is vague and fluid) I will defend to the last round in my high capacity magazine his right to say it. Even if he isn’t licensed and registered and insured for writing opinion letters to the newspaper.

Translated means, even though you may wish to take away my rights, I would use the very right you wish to take away to defend your rights.

Travis Brock,

Colfax
