Bulldog volleyball still in young mode

September 5, 2019

Coach Brandy Brown introduces the Bulldogs' volleyball team at last week's Meet the Bulldogs session. Brown takes the helm after coaching Tekoa/Oakesdale teams for nine years and Oakesdale teams for four years. Over those years her teams won six state titles, three as the Tekoa/Oakesdale combo club and three as Oakesdale. The Colfax V-net session will start with a jamboree at Colfax Saturday morning.

Colfax volleyball again this year will compete in the young mode. The Bulldogs, who graduated just two seniors off last year's squad, will hit the boards Saturday with zero seniors in the lineup for this year.

Coach Brandy Brown, who will head the team this year, notes the team's lineup will include players who rolled up at lot of experience with last year's club.

Headed by Coach Molly McNeil last year, the Bulldogs were stopped short of a return to state after they were stopped in the second round of the district playoffs at St. George's.

Grads off last year's team included Kylie Kackman, the Bulldogs' serving ace and setter who won the NE-South league's MVP award, and Madi Cox, also a steady server and front player.

Back as juniors this year will be Kierstyn York, Anni Cox, Sophie Klaveano, Perry Imler and Helena Hahn.

York and Cox played as freshman on the Colfax team which won the state title two years ago to wrap up the career of Coach Sue Doering.

Sophomores in the lineup this year are Justice Brown, Asher Cai and Abree Aune.

Imler and Cai shared the team's most-improved award at the end of the season.

Coach Brown noted the Bulldogs have just 15 players in the lineup to play the varsity and junior varsity level.

Colfax, St. John/Endicott and Garfield/Palouse will be at Colfax for a jamboree Saturday. Colfax will play SJE at 8 a.m and then GP at 9:15.

SJE and GP will play the third and final match started at 10:30.

First league match for Coach Brown and crew will be Sept. 12 at Asotin.
