Life skills I learned in the 1950's might be well applied in present day. Recently while decorating at the Bethel Cemetery in Steptoe it brought back memories of my youth.

My Mom was the caretaker when I was five. No Kindergarten then, so I would go each day to help her on the hill. We had hoses, sprinklers, a power reel mower and hand held clippers. Those were the tools we used, along with our desire for a job well done.

Today the grounds are serviced with a riding lawnmower, in-ground sprinklers and weed eaters. I know times have changed, however, what caught my eye saddened my heart. With all the modern equipment there were so many dirt patches, dry withered grass and weeds breaking through in abundance.

Due to the fact that the headstone for me and my husband was recently set next to family and loved ones I hope some day our sons and grandchildren will visit Bethel Cemetery and it will be as beautiful as it once was.

Susan (Harvey) Barbee,

Yakima, Wash.
