Clarification: Palouse CD grants

August 1, 2019

After an article about funding to the Palouse Conservation District in the July 18 edition, Jessica Self, grants and development manager for the district, expressed concern about how the information was relayed. She was asked to submit a list of statements, included below, to clarify the report.

The Gazette apologizes for any misinformation which might have been conveyed to readers by the original report.

Palouse Conservation District would like to clarify recent funding awarded by Washington State Department of Ecology. Palouse CD was awarded three grants totaling $1 million to be implemented over three years in Whitman County.

$500,000 was awarded for direct seeding, a tillage practice where farmers use a specialized drill to seed crops. The grant will span three years and 12 landowners will receive assistance for direct seed operations, totaling 9,000 acres. Direct seeding practices help to reduce soil erosion and improve water quality.

$250,000 was awarded towards restoration along Paradise Creek between Pullman and Moscow. This will bridge gaps in already existing restoration projects funded by Washington State Department of Transportation and Department of Ecology. Trees and shrubs will be planted along the creek to reduce soil erosion, reduce nutrient runoff, and reduce the impacts of flooding. Over the span of the three-year grant, plants will require continued maintenance in order to develop into a functional riparian habitat.

$250,000 was awarded to focus efforts on educating landowners and producers about conservation practices available to improve water quality throughout the Palouse River watershed. The project will also restore seven acres of riparian areas and monitor water quality.

Landowners interested in conservation practices can contact their local conservation district for funding opportunities.
