Second quarter building registers four-year high

July 18, 2019

Whitman County Building Inspector Dan Gladwill delivered a second quarter 2019 building report to County Commissioners Monday, highlighting a jump in numbers from recent years.

“A high average,” said Gladwill. “The last couple have been a little bit dismal.”

He noted a total of five single family homes, one manufactured home and five commercial properties, part of a $3.63 million total valuation, which is the second highest second quarter in the past six years.

The 2015 second quarter boom totaled $12 million.

“Still got houses coming through, too,” Gladwill told commissioners.

Total permits issued for this year's second quarter were 58, the highest since 62 in 2014. Total inspections were 78, a six-year low. Total fees were $41,626, a six-year high except again for 2015 which totaled $86,448.

Gladwill told commissioners about a shortage of contractors to cover all of the projects.

“People are having a hard time finding people to get 'er done,” he said.
