Residents work together on condo rose garden

Two Wheatland Arms Condominium residents admired the blooming roses and other flowers Monday morning as they sat on their porch.

Life-long Whitman County resident Armeda Hayer has been one of the many caretakers for the Wheatland Arms rose garden since her arrival in 2007.

Hayer said the garden has been around for years, and she put her touch on the garden by planting pink roses, which are in full bloom currently.

Hayer has lived all her 94 years in Whitman County. She was born and raised on a farm just southwest of Pullman. She moved to Colfax in 1941.

Hayer graduated from Colfax and met her late husband there.

"After my husband died, I didn't want to live out in the country anymore," Hayer said. "So I made my home at Wheatland Arms."

Pink roses were planted and gardened by several Wheatland Arms residents, who are all in their 80s.

Wheatland Arms resident Queenie Leinweber said she moved to the condominiums five years ago. She said the rose garden provides residents with a chance to visit and get to know each other.

"This is our home, and it's heartwarming to see all these flowers," Leinweber said.

The Wheatland Arms locals also meet every Tuesday for coffee at Fonk's.

Leinweber has lived in the county since she was 12 years old when her family moved to a farm near Steptoe.

Leinweber said all of the people who help maintain the garden are in their 80s, including herself. She said Clairence Cottle helps a lot with the rose garden, too.

"This garden is definitely good for all of us," Hayer said.

Wheatland Arms is located in the 200 block of N. Mills in Colfax.
