Four new reserve officers complete academy training

Saturday afternoon marked the completion of training for four newly-trained law enforcement officers after completing an eight month Basic Law Enforcement Reserve Academy which began last November. It was organized and presented by the Whitman County Sheriff's Office. Three new Whitman County reserve deputies and one reserve Pullman police officer received their commissions in Saturday's afternoon ceremony at Colfax.

Auditor Sandy Jamison conducted the oath of office for the deputies, and Pullman Chief Gary Jenkins administered the oath office to his new officer.

Whitman County Sheriff's Office welcomed Deputy Evan Kamerer, Deputy Randy Miller and Deputy Morgan Scharff into their ranks. Pullman Police welcomed Officer Jeff Gordon.

During their training the cadets studied criminal law, police procedure, report writing, basic investigation, defensive tactics, crisis intervention, firearms, emergency vehicle operations and other skills required to perform the basic duties of a law enforcement officer.

At the end of the training each officer passed the state law enforcement officer examination which was administered by a representative of the Washington State Basic Law Enforcement Academy.

Each new officer will now start field training where they will work alongside a full-time officer until they become proficient in their skills and are able to work on their own and supplement their home agency, Sheriff Brett Myers reported.
