Rosalia school board approves two projects

Rosalia school board members discussed improvement projects for the summer and watched a Rosalia senior demonstrate his senior project at Thursday night's meeting.

Marshal Howard, Rosalia School maintenance employee, reported there are two projects to be completed this summer.

The school board approved all the school windows to be replaced. Steve's Glass in Colfax gave the lowest bid of $44,000 for all windows, Howard said. The windows will be vinyl sliders, and are believed to be more efficient.

The elementary schools girls' and boys' bathrooms will be completely redone with new tile on the walls, new fixtures, new flooring and plumbing

"The bathroom plumbing has been a major problem in the past," Howard said.

Rosalia Superintendent Rick Linehan said the school allocates money for the projects, and the total was below the budgeted money.

Rosalia senior Cooper Ward presented his senior project to school board members. With the help of a $500 grant from the Rosalia chapter of Delta Gamma Tau and his teachers, he was able to build an "augmented reality sandbox."

The contraption needs a large wooden box with 240 pounds of sand, a projector shining down on the sand, an Xbox Connect and a computer to function.

The Xbox Connect reads the sandbox's topography and sends the information through the computer program, then the projector projects the topographical shading lines onto the sandbox, Ward said.

"When I move my hand throughout the sand," Ward said, "the actual image will change."

The sandbox can also create a flood with the flick of a finger and simulate water, he said.

"This teaches kids how topography works," he explained.

The project will remain at Rosalia schools to be used to teach them about topography.

Two long-time Rosalia employees submitted resignations. Dorinda Merritt, TR basketball cheer coach who worked for the school district for 24 years, and Rosalia Librarian Ella Solbrack will depart.

Rosalia Principal Matthew McLain shared the tentative schedule for next year. The new schedule showed choir, wood shop and an 8th grade STEM class will be added.
