Scholz duo named Rosalia grand marshals

Rosalia Chamber of Commerce has honored Bob and Sharon Scholz from Thornton by naming them grand marshals of this year’s 50th annual Rosalia Battle Days Parade and celebration.

Bob and Sharon began farming in the Rosalia/Thornton area in 1959. Sharon has been involved in the community in many capacities including Cub Scout leader, Sunday school teacher, Rosalia School booster and other roles. Whether it was making uniforms, knitting hats in school colors or making and passing out spirit signs for school ball games, she has been an avid booster and fan.

In 1976, she was titled the “Sign Lady” and was featured in the Spokesman-Review with her homemade spirit signs at the State B Basketball tournament. Sharon was deeply involved with Rosalia’s parade floats with their abstract art designs in the 1980s. These floats won several awards, including Grand Sweepstakes and others from Calgary to Chico, Calif. She developed the idea of float escorts and made escort uniforms. Her creative and artistic style has been applied and seen in the community throughout the years.

Bob began farming in Whitman County in the early 50s, when he was one of the first to operate a self-propelled combine on the Palouse. He would custom cut to open fields and build truck roads for the earlier pull combines. He later received a patent pending for his combine variable speed fan control. Bob is an avid car collector and has supplied convertibles for local parades for many years. He has driven his motorhome to many sporting events and made it accessible to Rosalia coaches and boosters.

In 2015, Bob and Sharon purchased the Rose Garage building in Rosalia. It was originally built in 1911 as the Rosalia Auto Company selling some of the first cars in the area. The building spent many years as a Ford dealership, then was converted to the Rose Bowl bowling alley during the 1960s through the 1980s. The Rose Garage is now a hot rod shop in the back and a local gathering area in the front. It hosts Rosalia Chamber of Commerce meetings and fundraisers as well as serving the community as a center for special events.
