Colton softball splits with league leader Pomeroy

The Colton High School softball team is now 10-2 on the season, 3-2 in league after a week’s worth of games.

On Tuesday night, they beat Garfield/Palouse 12-0 in four innings, followed by a 13-3 win in five innings over 2B Asotin. Abby Kelly and Emily Schultheis both hit home runs for Colton.

Last weekend, the Wildcats split a close doubleheader with Pomeroy, who still leads the Southeast 1B league with two wins over Colton.

The 1B playoffs begin May 10.

Doubleheader vs. Pomeroy

The Colton girls met Southeast 1B league leaders Pomeroy for a home doubleheader April 27 in wind and rain.

In game one, a 3-2 Colton loss, the Pirates’ Emma Severs came up to bat with the game tied in the top of the eighth inning, after Keely Maves hit a single and advanced on a wild pitch.

Severs delivered the game-winning hit.

Colton had one more at-bat.

“We didn’t get it done,” said Wildcats coach Brad Nilson.

In game two, an 8-7 Colton win, in the seventh, the Wildcats’ Abby Kelly hit a single and advanced on a batter-hit-by-pitch and a single from Josie Schultheis. Kelly then outran the throw to home plate on a mishandled ground ball.

Pomeroy coach Jessica Nelson called the games the coldest she had ever been a part of.

Emily Schultheis pitched game one for Colton and Josie Schultheis game two.

Colton will play again Thursday in a home doubleheader against Touchet at 3 p.m. and Friday at Garfield/Palouse (Garfield) at 4 p.m.
