Colfax bands jam in gym

Five Colfax bands performed their annual spring concert in the high school gym Monday night because remodeling work is underway in the CHS auditorium. Director Mike Morgan said this was the first time since he came to Colfax in 1992 that his bands performed outside of the auditorium.

The band chairs were arranged in the center of the gym facing the home grandstands. The recital brought a large crowd which filled most of the gym-level seats and a good portion of the balcony seating on the south side.

Bands were stationed in groups on the end grandstands of the gym and rotated to the center setup when it was their turn to perform.

Performing last night were the fifth grade band, sixth grade band, seventh-eighth grade band, high school band and the Jazz Band.

During the high school band segment of the concert, Morgan made a point of asking the parents of sophomores to keep their musicians in the band program for the next two years. A change in state core requirements for two years of high school music has left bands all over the state with few juniors and seniors in their ranks. Colfax this year has just three seniors in the high school band, and two seniors in the jazz band.
