Seeks funds for Latvia cancer treatment

April 11, 2019

An account has been set up to support Marty Walker of Colfax, who is battling cancer and plans to make a trip to Latvia for a treatment which has not been sanctioned in the United States.

Walker was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic melanoma in a cancer battle which started in May of 2017 with a checkup of a spot on his ear and evolved into two surgeries. It was described as a radical neck dissection.

The typical life span of a patient with his diagnosis is just more than 12 months. The survival rate after four years is 28 percent.

Now on immunotherapy treatment, Walker and his wife, Raylene Lawrence, plan to go to Latvia this month for what is known as Echo 7 treatment, a viral therapy which has been found to increase melanoma survival rates by three or four times. The Echo 7 treatment has been approved by 20 countries, but not in the United States. It involves a naturally-occurring virus that attacks melanoma cells in a targeted manner.

Walker, 60, moved to Colfax in 2012 to join his wife, a physician’s assistant at Whitman Medical Group. She is also chief medical provider for the Whitman County Jail.

The goal for Walker's cancer account is $25,000.
